Ryan’s role in the Hub is as MSU’s director for SEISMIC, an interinstitutional effort supported by the Sloan Foundation designed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the STEM fields. As a systems thinker, Ryan focuses on the many interrelated barriers and obstacles to student success, then identifies ways to overcome them. Outside of his role in the Hub for Innovation in Learning and Teaching, Ryan is an award-winning chemistry professor in Lyman Briggs College. His research is split between chemistry education research and student success research. He has developed and assessed a variety of interventions to improve students’ outcomes both in individual classes or throughout a student’s college career.
Ryan earned his Ph.D. in chemistry and chemistry education from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Albion College in Chemistry and Math education. He is frequently spied on the volleyball court, ultimate field, or kayaking.
